(24 sep. 1739, Chizovo, Rusia–16 oct. 1791, cerca de Iasi, Moldavia).
Oficial del ejército ruso. Ingresó a la guardia montada (1755) y ayudó a que
Catalina II alcanzara el poder (1762). Luchó con distinción en la guerra
ruso-turca (1768–74), luego se convirtió en favorito de Catalina (1774–76) y fue nombrado gobernador general de la "Nueva Rusia (Ucrania meridional). En 1783 Catalina lo designó príncipe de Táuride. Como mariscal de campo desde 1784, introdujo reformas en el ejército, construyó el puerto de Sebastopol y organizó una flota en el mar Negro. Intentó colonizar las estepas ucranianas, pero subestimó los costos y dejó muchos proyectos sin concluir; su gran capacidad para ocultar los puntos débiles de su administración llevó a que se sostuviera que construía simples fachadas –"pueblos Potemkin – para mostrar a Catalina en su recorrido por la región. Comandó el ejército ruso en la segunda guerra ruso-turca.
